In this podcast, we take you into Breda's past. We go way back in time to arrive at the roots of our royal house, which originated here. The podcast is about Het Speelhuis (the playhouse), which came to life through 4 half-brothers.

The Catholic

The second episode is about the eldest of the four brothers, Filips Willem, the first heir of Willem van Oranje. He was promised a princely existence, but it all turned out differently. He remained the only adherent of Catholicism and not without reason. Why?

The abduction

At 13 as a student at the university, he was still enjoying himself, enjoying parties and celebrations, not knowing that his fate was determined just across the border. The Spanish king found in Filips Willem an easy way to hurt father Willem, and Filips found himself in exile overnight.

Return

After years, he returned, hoping to be received with open arms, but luck was once again not on Filips' side. He did not give up and remained strong. He kept trying to claim his inheritance, despite the setbacks that kept coming his way.

Finally returned to his beloved Breda, Filips saw his chances to build something he would be remembered for forever, but before it was finished, the unlucky man found himself dead.
